Microphotography using an industrial 5Mpixel camera

  •    My microscope is a professional one but old fashioned.
  •    I bought it many years ago, for US100 from Aliexpress.
  •    Now, this model is not for sale but an equivalent is still available, costing about US100 also.
  •    I also bought recently a student version with a maximum objective of less than 40x, because it is not capable of oil immersion but its tube is too short  and its stage is too small to accommodate a micro adjustable stage.
  •  It will be too difficult to move the glass slides. However, the student microscope comes with 5 sample glass slides.
  • Another potential problem is the lack of a condensor in the lighting system. The student microscope only comes with a mirror, because it is not designed for the 100x oil immersion objective.
  • As a rule of thumb, the maximum magnification of an objective is 1000x its N.A., numerical aperture. The 100x is 1.2, 40x is 0.65, the 10x is 0.25.
  • Based on the pictures taken, it was not clear when I used the 40x objective. It could be due to my poor lighting. I just use a portable LED lamp. Or due to the lack of oil immersion to improve the effective N.A.
  • Although we only need the 10x objective, we need the adjustable stage and condensor in order to get a clearer picture. I recommend we invest in the fully equipped US100 microscope such as this one.

  •  US $138.60 with a 2Mp eyepiece, but I recommend an industrial C screw 5Mp camera with adapters, which should cost the same.

  • I use these samples to take photos using an industrial camera with a resolution of 5Mpixel using a USB 2.0.
  • You can easily videos in Full HD at 30 fps using the S-Eye software which is provided but it is in chinese. Better download the free software from its website.
  • To get the advertised 5Mp at 15 fps, we need to use the provided amcap software.
  • I was able to take photos using my Sony A5100 also but I need to transfer it to this PC in order to post. The picture is also not impressive because it shows a circle. I need to edit the 24Mpixel picture but I do not think I can get more details than from this 5Mp camera.
  • To use a DSLR or mirrorless camera, I used an M42/T2 screw to C/CS screw adapter which I already have in preparation of taking these photos and videos.
  • I found that looking at the microscope appear meaningless if I cannot take photos or videos.
