Successful in Updating Hero4Black to version 02
Just bought it yesterday, on the last day of February, 2015. I checked the version as 01, shown on power-up.
This is the most difficult update I have ever done. It is supposed to be fully automatic which means that there is no feedback at all. It also relies on icons, instead of letters.
The easiest is via the smartphone apps. I tried the Gopro Studio, it is even worse. No menu at all as to any downloadable camera firmware. In the Gopro Apps, at least there is a menu to download camera firmware automatically. Actually there is no way you can download manually from your smartphone.
The manual update version is to download the firmware after entering your camera's serial number and then you are supposed to install it on a new formatted micro SD memory card. Too dangerous for me.
Using the Gopro Apps also failed a few times. The trick is to disconnect the Gopro Apps from the camera first and wait for a few minutes for the firmware to download. There is no feedback at all. If you have a fast connection, as shown by youtube firmware updates, it will take less than a minute. In my case, it took more than half an hour. Even the Gopro Apps crashed once.
The Gopro Apps will try to connect to the camera automatically so I connect to the internet looking at the Gopro pictures and videos which are linked to the Gopro Apps. Make sure you dot no exit the Gopro Apps, and the Gopro Apps is not connected to the Hero4Black camera.
The reason is that, when the smartphone connects to the Hero4 camera, it actually connects via its wifi address. The name you gave to the Hero4 on setting it up is the SSID, the password is the Wifi password. It is very clear if you use iOS. You must connect manually via the Wifi settings. Android can do it automatically but with some hickups. It cannot return to the Internet Wifi server gracefully. It actually has returned to the Internet, but it gave a warning that Gopro Apps has failed to connect to the internet. Just ignore the message.
Once the download of the camera firmware has completed, there is no message in the Gopro Apps at all. I had to see it from Android status. As usually is the case for all downloads. I touched the message, which led me to the Gopro Apps with a down arrow at the top menu bar. The rest is as explained in all the youtube documentaries about the Hero4Black update.
